Bodega Sessions liner notes by Rick Shubb
Bob Wilson and I play music together for our own enjoyment.
It's always been that way, since the first time we met. While
each of us, at some point in our lives, has aspired to a career
in music, it has never been in the context of this combination.
The music this combination plays is special; it's for us. And
now that we've made this CD, it can be for you, too.
A few times each year, Bob comes to visit at my home near Bodega
Bay, and spends three or four days. We both treasure these times
in which we burrow in and indulge our various mutual interests:
music, obviously, but also movies, serials, radio, ...old stuff.
You couldn't exactly call it nostalgia, because most of our
favorite stuff is from before we were born. These visits might
include watching a serial, or perhaps a couple of obscure '30s
mysteries taped from TCM, or maybe some "B" westerns we picked
up from the Video Vendor. Our appetite for such things seems
insatiable.
A major portion of these sessions is always devoted to music.
We've nurtured a fairly small repertoire throughout the years,
mostly because we like to pay a lot of attention to each song.
When a song is new to us, it's not unusual for us to play it
for hours. We add songs slowly, and usually by the time one
makes its way onto the "A-list" another has drifted off.
When I got some new recording equipment last year our visits
began focusing even more on the music. Sometimes we'd still
squeeze in a movie or two, but over the past year each of Bob's
visits has produced recordings of three or four of our songs.
Whenever Bob and I have performed, it's been as a trio. The
music from these Bodega sessions was designed to include a string
bass. I've known Charlie Warren for years as the bassist in
my favorite group, the Rhythm Brothers, and I knew that his
playing would be perfect to complement us. So the three of us
got together and did some serious practicing, then Charlie added
his part to the Bodega sessions, completing our sound.
So there you have it. The Shubb Wilson Trio rides again.
