Frequently
Asked Questions
Why do Shubb Capos cause the fewest tuning problems of any capos ?
They are totally adjustable, and they are uniquely engineered to duplicate the resilience of your fingertip and the closing action of your hand. No other capo design employs these features, ...learn more.

The rubber sleeve
on my capo is showing signs of wear. Are replacement parts available?
Yes. We've tried everything we can think of for years
to get music stores to stock replacement sleeves and caps for
our capos, but somehow it doesn't always seem to happen. If
someone in a store tells you that they are not available, please
inform them that they are. Maybe we'll get the word to the stores
eventually, but meanwhile, you can get
them directly from us for a dollar apiece.

Can you direct me
to a music store where I can buy a particular Shubb product?
Since most of our sales are through wholesale distributors,
we unfortunately do not have a list of stores that carry our
products, let alone specific products.
Our capos are very popular, especially the C1 (original
steel string guitar) model, and most music stores carry them.
We encourage our distributors to handle our full line of products,
but since we don't require that they do, many opt to handle
only the most popular items or models. Consequently, the music
store you visit probably doesn't have some of our products,
and may not even know that they exist.
We like to support the retailers whenever
possible, and encourage you to inform them of those products
of ours that they may not know about. Maybe even point them
to our website for more information. But our main priority is
that anyone who wants one of our products should be able to
get it. So...

Do you have any
instructional material for using the partial capo?
No, other than advising that it's most popular application is
at the second fret, from the bass side covering strings 5-4-3.
The rest is up to you. But those who have a spirit of adventure
seem to come up with good sounds. If you really want some help,
though, no one I know of has delved deeper into partial capoing
than Harvey Reid. He has some material available at his website.

questions...
Does Shubb Capos
do custom work?
Yes, sometimes. Within certain limitations, we can adapt capos
to fit unusually wide, or shallow, or thick necks ...that sort
of thing. I once even made a capo for a fiddle, but I don't
particularly plan on doing it again. If it's something we can
do without redesigning our product from the ground up, we're
often willing to take a shot at it. We usually don't charge
extra, but it takes us several weeks to work into our production
schedule.

questions...
Does the Shubb
Dobro capo work on a squareneck or a roundneck?
It works on a squareneck. It will also work on a roundneck,
if the instrument is set up to be played "Hawaiian"
style: unfrettably high string action, 3/8" to 1/2"
high, played with a bar. more...

questions...
Should the capo
go onto the neck from above (bass side) or below (treble side)?
Either is correct. Users are divided about 50-50, with perhaps
a slight edge going to the "from above" users. Personally,
I use mine from below because it feels more like my hand covering
the strings. more...

Which guitars does the
"radically curved," or 7.25" radius capo (C4,
C4B, S4) fit?
Some of the older Teles and Strats, and copies of these. But
the great majority of electric guitars have the gentler fretboard
radius similar to a steel string acoustic, and should use our
C1, C1B, or S1 model. But the soft rubber on our capo is pretty
accommodating, and on many necks these capos are interchangeable.

questions...
Does the Shubb Deluxe capo come in brass, or black chrome?
No, our deluxe series featuring the roller are available only in stainless steel (models S1, S2,S3, S4, S5, S5r, and S3v). This is not a marketing decision, but a manufacturing one. The shape of the bottom piece that holds the roller housing is made by a casting process, and the (very expensive) tool is specific to the material. I must admit that a brass or a black Shubb capo with a roller is appealing, but it is not likely to appear in the near future. I didn't say never.
back to the
questions...
Does the partial capo come in nickel? In black chrome? Deluxe?
Our partial capos are only available in brass, at least in the foreseeable future. The plating process we use utilizes the shape of the capo, and the partial capo's shape is not conducive to the process.
back to the
questions...
Is there a model of capo that will fit my bass guitar?
It's hard to say for sure; our capos were designed for guitars, but there is a pretty good chance that one of our guitar capos will fit your bass guitar. Some bass necks are not much larger than guitar necks, and our S1, C1, C1k or C1B will fit those. If it's just a little larger, one of our 12-string capos might work: S3, C3,C3k, or C3B. Our capo that fits the largest neck is our S3v.
back to the
questions...
Do you have a capo for an extra-wide neck ?
Our widest capos are the nylon strings (S2, C2, C2k, C2B - flat fretboards) and our 12-string capos (S3, C3, C3k, C3B - radius fretboards), both of which are 2.25 inches wide. These will work on just about any 6 string or 12-string guitar. We have occasionally made custom capos for unusual instruments, such as 8-string or 10-string guitars, with varying degrees of success. All we are able to change on these capos is the part that covers the strings, making it longer for a wider fretboard. The closing mechanism must remain the same, so if the other part is too long, the geometry gets out of whack. When we've made these, it is with the disclaimer that they might not work that well.
