Windows Vista Alert

April 18, 2007
Our software solutions are based on the FileMaker database engine, and there are some known issues with FileMaker running on Windows Vista.

We cannot support any installation of our products on Vista at this time.

Current versions of SongMaster and JokeFile are built on FileMaker 8.5, and there will be an effort to apply a now-available FileMaker patch that will make both of these solutions Vista compatible. This could happen soon. GigMaster, on the other hand, is built on FileMaker 6, and no patch from FileMaker is available, nor will one ever be available. So for GigMaster to be brought into specs, it must be rebuilt from the ground up. Obviously, this will take more time.

So what will be the fate of GigMaster? I'm not sure yet. A new version, built on FileMaker 8.5, is in development. Since it requires a total rebuild, I am examining many of its features to decide whether to keep or to lose them. The more I keep, the longer in development it will be. Chances are, the next iteration of the product will be something like GigMaster Lite, cutting a little of the fat. If you are a GigMaster user, and want to inform me of which features you consider important, and which might be expendible, I would welcome your input.

Rick Shubb, shubb@shubb.com

Versions supported

It is not possible for us to support some of the earliest versions of our software.
The earliest versions of our products we are able to support are:
GigMaster 4.0, SongMaster 5.0, JokeFile 2.0.

Your first line of tech support is your HELP file, accessed from within the program. Most questions are answered there. Be sure that you have explored HELP thoroughly before contacting us directly. If your problem is not solved by the HELP file, you can contact us at: support@shubb.com or you can call 707-876-3001 (Monday - Friday, 9:00 to 5:00 Pacific time). Be sure to have your serial number handy if you call, or to include it if you email, since we cannot provide support without it.

Free support is limited to two incidents, and does not include customizing the software to perform beyond its intended functions.

When issues arise which could apply to many users, we will post information here on this web page under "known issues." ( below)

GigMaster
version upgrade history

current version:
GigMaster 5.0.5
uploaded on Feb. 22, 2006

Adds gig names to musician report. On Windows, fixes a bug that inhibited auto entry of form letters (fixed earlier on Mac). On Windows adds scripted data import from earlier versions of 5 (already present on Mac). On some email routines, adds a step to review message before sending. (Depending on the email application, some emails previously were sent immediately, without opportunity to review and edit.)

GigMaster 5.0.4
uploaded on Jan. 5, 2006

Fixes a bug in the duplicate gig routine, that in some cases could cause related data to not show up in reports. Also fixes a bug involving entering notes on the "all bands" calendar. Other background changes to ensure data consistency.

GigMaster 5.0.3
uploaded on March 10, 2005

Fixed a bug in displaying names from imported records on the People & Places List.

GigMaster 5.0.2
was uploaded on May 22, 2004

Fixes a bug in the Gig Exchange routine which causes the exchange file (gigs.tab) to not be found automatically. User must navigate to find the file. Also, field mapping dialogs appear. Not harmful, but confusing. If you do not use the Gig Exchange routine, there is no need to upgrade from 5.0.1.

GigMaster 5.0.1
uploaded on January 28, 2004

"AUGUST BUG" discovered.

Just 3 days after the release of 5.0, a bug was discovered which had been present in GigMaster through many versions. We quickly fixed it, and uploaded 5.0.1. In all previous versions, as far back as 3.0 or perhaps futher, the month of August 2004 begins on the wrong day of the week, making all dates that month fall on the wrong days.

Because of this serious bug, we ecourage any registered user who is running an earlier version of GigMaster to upgrade to the current version FREE OF CHARGE.

GigMaster 5.0
uploaded on January 25, 2004

Available for Windows (95, 2000, XP) and Mac OS X. Not available for Mac OS9.

GigMaster 4.5v2

uploaded on April 20, 2002

Fixes a bug which could suppress printing of notes manually entered onto the main calendar. Also fixes a bug which caused some records to not be found when running the "today's calls" script from the phone icon on the main menu, or when setting the Communications file to auto-run this script as a tickler.

a minor bug fix to GigMaster 4.5v1
uploaded on April 4, 2002

Corrects a problem which on some systems could cause picture fields (SongBook pict, band pictures in the References section) to not revert properly from archives. This fix was considered so minor that the version number was not changed. If you've downloaded GigMaster between 3/29/02 and 4/4/02, and are concerned about this archiving routine, contact us at support@shubb.com.

GigMaster 4.5v1
uploaded on March 29, 2002

This minor upgrade fixes a bug which could cause incomplete importing of portal data (on Gigbook page 2 and page 5) from version 4.3. If you are now using 4.5, there is no reason to upgrade.

GigMaster 4.5
uploaded on Feb. 8, 2002

(We've skipped 4.4 and gone directly to 4.5, since the added features seem significant.)

New features include:

Assignment of any portion of product sales to musicians, and selectably tracking sales as part of musicians' pay.

Letters file greatly expanded, and renamed "communications" or "Com" for short. Now can be set up to function as a reminder (tickler) file, showing calls, emails, faxes to be done on a daily basis.

Addition of a calculated "band balance" field, which sums all undistributed pay for each band; in effect, what the band has "in the bank."

In the songbook, chord charts can be copied as a text block for pasting into email messages or WP documents.

On multiple date gigs, each date can have separate set lists.

Direct link from GigBook Page 2 and the People & Places file, to streamline the entry of new musicians "on the fly."

Improved "musician conflict" script; faster, more intuitive.

Expanded reporting; improved report menu interface.

Fixes a bug which caused song times to not lookup properly in SetMaker.

Fixes a bug which blocked import of calendar notes from earlier versions.

...plus various other minor interface and functionality improvements.

GigMaster 4.3
uploaded on Sept. 1, 2001

Version 4.3 provides the option of displaying dates in the European format (day/month/year). The date format is user controlled, so either format is supported.

GigMaster 4.3 corrects a small bug (In 4.2, on gigs of more than 10 dates, the 11th date does not appear in the "dates" field on the perfomance contract. All other dates appear. A workaround is to skip the 11th space in data entry.)

In the SongBook, an optional 64-bar chord chart has been added. (Not actually longer, still 128 beats, but divided and numbered to print out as 64 bars.) Similarly, an optional 2-column lyric page has been added to accomodate songs with many verses.

Capability to designate dates as unavailable for specific musicians has been expanded. In addition to a date range, individual dates can now also be stored as unavailable for any musician.

The Calendar has been extended through the year 2020.

The Gig List has a new user-controlled display field.(In the space where previously band name could be displayed, you now can display any one of several GigBook fields.)

KNOWN ISSUES
in recent versions

In GigMaster 5.0.2

In some cases when data is imported from an earlier version, names in the People & Places file may not appear on the list. Workaround: click on the list as button on the data page of each problem record.

Form letter text does not enter properly in the log file. Workaround: export the person's data to the mailing list, and use the form letter function there.

Memos created from the log page of the People & Places file are not properly linked to a person's record. Workaround: substitute a task for a memo. They function identically.

In some very rare cases the my pay field on Page 1 displays data from a different record. Does not effect reports or actual data; problem is limited to display only. If the my pay amount appears incorrect, ignore that field on page 1. The figure on page 2 is correct.

All the above bugs were fixed in 5.0.3

In GigMaster 5.0.1

A bug in the Gig Exchange routine causes the exchange file (gigs.tab) to not be found automatically. User must navigate to find the file. Also, field mapping dialogs appear. As long as you don't change the field mapping, there is no problem. It is a little confusing, though. Fixed in version 5.0.2, uploaded May 22, 2004. If you do not use the Gig Exchange routine, or if you don't mind navigating to the file manually, there is no need to upgrade from 5.0.1.

The "August Bug"

In all prior versions, as far back as 3.0 or perhaps futher:

the month of August 2004 begins on the wrong day of the week, making all dates that month fall on the wrong days.

Because of this serious bug, we ecourage any registered user who is running an earlier version of GigMaster to upgrade to the current version FREE OF CHARGE.

In GigMaster 4.5v1

A bug has been discovered which can suppress the printout of notes directly entered onto the main Calendar. If you have experienced this problem, and if printing these notes is a feature you would like to use, you can download a replacement Calendar file, which will correct the problem. None of your data will be lost by replacing this file.

Download replacement calendar for Windows

Download replacement calendar for Macintosh

This bug was fixed in version 4.5v2, uploaded April 9, 2002

In GigMaster 4.5.

A bug which on some systems could cause incomplete importing of portal data (on Gigbook page 2 and page 5) from version 4.3.

In GigMaster 4.5 and some earlier versions.

A bug in the "save to archives" routine, in which the script asks for the file "archive.G43" which is not present. The workaround: simple point it to the file "archive.G45" instead, which is located in the Archives folder inside the GigMaster 4.5 folder. This should correct the archiving process. Consequences of not correcting this: picture fields (the "pic" page in the SongBook, the band pictures in the "References" section) may not revert properly from archives.

These bugs were fixed in version 4.5v1, uploaded April 4. 2002.

In GigMaster 4.2 and earlier.

Requests have been made to provide the option of displaying dates in the European format (day/month/year). Version 4.3 added the option of using this date format.

In GigMaster 4.2, Windows and Macintosh

On gigs of more than 10 dates, the 11th date does not appear in the "dates" field on the perfomance contract. All other dates appear. Workaround: when entering dates on page one, skip the eleventh spot on the date field. You can still enter up to 15 dates.

4.3 corrects this bug.

In GigMaster 4.2, Windows and Macintosh

On some reports musicians with the same last name can possibly have their data grouped together, appearing as though they are one person.

4.3v2 (uploaded Oct. 2, 2001) corrects this bug.

GigMaster 4.1, Windows and Macintosh:

Some minor features which were introduced in version 4.1 require filters. These filters are already present on many computers, but not all, and were not included in the GigMaster installer. If you have found that spellcheck is not supported, and if the importing of graphics is not supported (band pict, letterhead, signature, etc.) then you can download these filters.

for Windows: download the filters now (793K)

for Macintosh: download the filters now (884K)

The problem was corrected in version 4.1v2 and beyond.

GigMaster 4.1 for Windows:

A conflict with some versions of QuickDraw for Windows caused GigMaster 4.1 to shut down when creating a new musician record in the People file, or when viewing a musician's record. The problem also exists in the REF file, when viewing or creating band data. One solution is to uninstall QuickTime. Another is to download replacement files (People and Ref) in which the problem has been corrected.

download the replacement files now (1.13MB)

The problem was corrected in version 4.1v2 and beyond.

REINSTALLING GigMaster

For whatever reason you might need to reinstall GigMaster (hard drive crash, buying a new computer, operating system problem, etc.) you main concern will be preserving your data. For this reason, we can't emhasize strongly enough the importance of REGULAR BACKUP OF YOUR FILES! When you go to reinstall GigMaster, you will depend on a saved copy (somewhere other than on your hard drive) of your GigMaster files.

(NOTE: the files which actually contain your data are: GigBook., data., People., Mailing., letters., Ref., Calnotes., SongBook., and Setmaker.. If you are selectively limiting your backup, be sure to include these files.)

on Windows

Run the GigMaster installer exe file. (On the CD-ROM, "GM5_set.exe." The downloaded version, "G45d_set.exe.") This will install the GigMaster folder (containing all the GigMaster files) onto the hard drive in the program files folder of your computer. It will also create a shortcut for GigMaster in your start menu, and place various support files in your system folder.

The GigMaster files themeselves will contain only the original sample data, none of your own data, and they will be locked. Just like when you first installed the program. So you need to replace these files with your saved copies of the same files, which contain your own data and which are unlocked. Insert the removable media that contains your saved files.

If you have backed up the entire GigMaster folder intact (on a single zip or CD), then drag the saved GigMaster folder onto your hard drive (C drive) into the program files folder, opting to REPLACE (write over) the GigMaster folder already present.

If you have backed up the GigMaster files separately, then drag your saved GigMaster files into the GigMaster folder on your hard drive (C drive) in the program files folder, opting to REPLACE (write over) each of the files with the same names already present. (Again, the files which actually contain your data are: GigBook., data., People., Mailing., letters., Ref., Calnotes., SongBook., and Setmaker.).

on Macintosh

If you have backed up the entire GigMaster 5.0 folder intact (on a single zip or CD), then drag the saved GigMaster 5.0 folder onto your hard drive. That's all there is to it.

If you have backed up the GigMaster files separately, then first follow the original intall procedure: (If from the CD-ROM, drag the GigMaster 5.0 folder onto your hard drive. If from the downloaded installer, double click on the "GigMaster 5.0.sit" file.) Once installed, drag your saved GigMaster files into the GigMaster 5.0 folder on your hard drive, opting to REPLACE (write over) each of the files with the same names already present. (The files which actually contain your data are: GigBook, data, People, Mailing, letters, Ref., Calnotes, SongBook., and Setmaker.

SongMaster

current version
SongMaster 6.0
uploaded Jan. 25, 2006

No known bugs or issues. Introduces features not present in the SongBook and SetMaker sections of GigMaster 5. So for serious SongMaster users, there is now a good reason to upgrade the standalone version of SongMaster.

Expanded and improved SetMaker features, improved transposer function (now transposes Words-plus-Chords), new chart format, accurate Word-plus-Chords printout, more powerful filtered lists, tooltips, custom menus, improved interface, new formatting options, and more.

Uprgrade paths from SongMaster 3.0, 3.1, and 5.0 and from the SongBook in GigMaster 4.5 and 5. Data transfer from these versions is scripted. Versions earlier than 3.0 are no longer supported.

SongMaster 5.0

There was no SongMaster 4. The version number moved directly from 3 to 5, to bring it up with GigMaster 5.0. SongMaster 5 is identical to the song-specific sections (SongBook, SetMaker, transposer) of GigMaster 5.

There are currently no known bugs or issues with this version.
